Letter From The Editor

With the new season underway it is difficult looking back objectively on the previous one, but the main memory of the club's first season back in existence for me is of the great fun had by everyone involved. It was very much a season of muddling through, but everyone played their part and we were involved in plenty of thoroughly enjoyable games and also plenty of just as enjoyable after-match get-togethers. The social scene is one of the fundamental parts of any village cricket team, and one we certainly intend to adhere to in the future! All of the games were played (mostly) in the right spirit too, and we also thank our opponents for this. It's good to see many of the teams on the fixture list for this year are those with whom we enjoyed the best atmosphere in 1993. The main disappointment for everyone involved with the club was the poor support received for our home games. When the club was re-established the autumn before last there was great interest within the village, but we never saw that extended to Sunday afternoons. Maybe this year we'll see an improvement Li that respect. It would be nice to receive the same interest from passers-by that is experienced by Burley and Brockenhurst Cricket Clubs, for example, but perhaps we are handicapped a little by the less open aspect of our ground. One of the main aims of village cricket as we see it is an involvement in the community.

Without doubt the best individual performance of the season was Rob Ccoksey's stubborn 21 away to Bashley. His innings lasted for all but the last five balls of a 45-over innings and ensured us a draw against all the odds, and to the great frustration of the home side!

The highest score of the season was Martin Wood's 50 away to Camelot. The year's best bowling figures were Tom Shirley's 5 - 18 in the match against Hythe & Dibden. The highest stand was that of 49 for the 7th wicket against Cadnam by Steve Keen and Carl Osbome.

Other good performances were: Mark Randell - Turner's 45 against London Welsh; Dave Rees143 against Romsey; Carl Qsbome's 45 against Cadnam and his 4 - 41 against Hyde; Rob Cooksey"s 4-39 against British Rail.

MATCH REPORTS

COMPTONCHAMBERLAYNE vs SWAY

Rarely can a teams two opening matches of a season have been so contrasting! Just three factors linked the two ties: the number of dropped catches (something which without doubt cost us both games), the over-confidence with which we went into the second innings (assuming we'd already done enough to win with good first innings performances), and of course the fact that we lost both games! At least the closeness of both contests was reason to be pleased, especially against Camelot, a team which beat us by 60 and 132 runs in our two meetings last season. Compton started slowly, on a pitch which was to prove very much one for the bowlers. Indeed just 12 runs came off the first 16 overs, Osborne at one stage having conceded just one run from 6 overs. The first wicket had fallen with the score on just three, their top batsman trapped LEW by Cooksey. The next two wickets saw the addition of 69 more runs, but the home team's innings collapsed after this, and though the run-rate picked up a little, the early work ensured that the score was kept down to 92 - 7. We actually managed to keep up a good run-rate for the first few overs, and with both openers reaching double figures without problems things looked very comfortable, but with the score on 27, Wilkie was harshly given out caught behind and this signalled our downfall. Even so, at 45-4 with 15 overs remaining all seemed quite reasonable, but of the bottom six batsmen only Cooksey wasn't caught out whilst trying to force the score along and the wickets in hand gradually dwindled. The final wicket fell off the first ball of the final over, but this at least was more due to a good catch than a poor shot.

CAMELOT vs SWAY

By contrast the pitch at Southampton Sports Centre for the Camelot tie invited runs. Sway's openers responded to the invitation by putting on 35 for the first wicket in under eight overs. The next two wickets fell at 60 and 62 respectively, but after this Wilkie and Randell - Turner took control, producing the two highest scores ever for the club, both finishing not out, on 105 (119 balls) and 73 (59 balls) respectively. In the reply the bowling wasn't nearly as tidy as in the first match, and Camelot stuck to the run rate as repeated legside deliveries conceded frequent fours on the short boundaries. J. Colborne overshadowed Wilkie with 112 not out, and it was this left-handed batsman that had caused most of the confusion with the bowlers. Not surprisingly several club records were broken in this game. The total score was by far our highest yet, by a margin of 70 runs, and three wickets is the fewest we have conceded in an innings. Wdkie's 105 not out is easily our highest individual score, In fact Randell - Turner's is the clubs secound highest! The record which is likley to stand the longest however is the unbroken fourth wicket stand of 160.

SWAY vs THE MUSKETEERS

Two factors decided this evening match for Sway: The batting of Alexander and, perhaps most significantly, winning the toss. Without Alexander's 57 not out, which included eleven fours, it is debatable whether or not a sufficient target would have been reached. Most of the other batsmen struggled to cope with a damp wicket on which four out of five balls failed to bounce (and the other generally came up round their ears!). Most of the wickets were bowled under the bat. It was the toss and the captain's decision to bat first which sealed the victory, though, the visitors struggled in the deteriorating light, finishing 29 runs short of their target. The match gave us opportunity to give new players a try out . Having new batsmen and bowlers (there were four changes from the weekend's game) and a win was pleasing so early in the season against a team who beat us last season. The biggest irony of the game was Osbome's wicket maiden from his only over - bowling spin as opposed to his usual quickies!
